Vive Towers

A concrete tower wrapped in a soft, see-through lattice with gardens and platforms

Towers left unfinished, and the people who moved in anyway.

A speculative design for 2030.

Residents digging a vegetable plot between the towers; a resident by a window boarded with wooden planks

City of Ecstasy (别样幸福城), one of the best known.

Across China, towers stand unfinished, their money run dry.

Some buyers moved in anyway, with no doors or windows, no water, power or gas. They wash with rainwater, light their rooms with battery lamps, farm the empty lots and cook together.

A comic: a resident spends a token on an emergency exit, and a soft structure grows between the towers for a party

In 2030, an experiment lets them finish the city themselves.

Digital nomads, remote workers, artists and farmers move in and run it together, as a decentralized autonomous organization.

consensus

  1. It suggests a spacefrom residents’ needs
  2. Residents proposetheir own ideas
  3. Others agreeby spending tokens
  4. Consensusenough of them agree
  5. The space growslike slime mould

The structure grows like slime mould, where people need it.

Sensors and residents’ profiles tell it what people need. Nothing is built until enough of them agree.

Four elevations of the towers, wrapped in a lattice that holds a theater, farms, restaurants, classrooms and a playground

Everything the towers never got, hung between them.

A theater, an auditorium, sky restaurants, a vertical farm, a school, a playground, even a small theme park, in a lattice of soft, see-through panels that keeps adjusting.
